ZK Founder and Head Designer, Maria in the Studio
Zaya & Kai is a lifestyle brand at the forefront of the
slow fashion movement in Byron Bay. We work towards a more sustainable future in fashion, working with fully compostable fabrics that will break down in 60 days when handles correctly. Together we're changing the world, one dress at a time.
"It all started in my bedroom back in 2018. Friends around me was starting to have babies and I fell in love with the beautiful tiny clothing I suddenly saw everywhere I looked. Having always been interested in textile design and living in tune with nature, it was a no brainer where life was heading.
For the next 5 years I've taught myself business, design and ceramics managed to find their way in as well. It all started as a market stall in and around the Byron Shire and over the years this label has grown to become available both online as well as in retail stores across Australia, America and Europe. The range now includes sustainable pieces for both women, children as well as gritty ceramics handmade by myself in sunny Byron Bay.
I'm so excited to share our journey with you all, introducing our newest products and technologies and doing our part in being the change."
Zaya & Kai is ethically manufactured with carefully selected manufacturers, farmers and fabric suppliers across India. Our manufacturers are audited regularly with GOTS and OEKO-TEX certifications ensuring employees are supported in a safe working environment.
Our manufacturers are a very important part of our business and we work with them closely and visit them when possible. Having strong relationships with our makers is incredibly important to us in ensuring our mutual understanding and ethical improvements are nurtured and continue to develop.
Our manufacturers are committed to producing high quality pieces, at the same time ensuring their employees are well looked after.
We have made it our mission to use fibres of a natural origin or recycled wherever possible. We work with plant waste from the food industry making some of our range fully compostable, breaking way for a new world of fashion.
All of our organics are GOTS certified and our dyes are OEKO-TEX certified meaning they're free from nasty chemicals.
